Getting 401.1 after I switch to https on CRM 2016 on prem

Hi!

I'm a bit confused here at the moment. I've just installed a CRM 2016 on prem which is working fine using http://servername/orgname. However I'm going to set this up as an IFD so I thought I'd get it up on https now to have some stuff done before the ADFS is in place fully. I was thinkting of using auth.contoso.com as the server address and have the DNS set up for that, which I have med work with an IFD earlier so that shouldn't be a problem.

Now the issue, I've set all four addresses in the deployment manager to auth.contoso.com, set it to https. I've added https binding to the website in the IIS and I've given the app-pool user access to the wildcard certificate. When I surf to https://auth.contoso.com/orgname I'm prompted with a login popup from explorer and after three strikes I'm out with a 401.1. If I use https://servername as the web address it works but I get a certificate error since the certificate is set up for *.contoso.com.

How can I get this to work using auth.contoso.com as the server address without and claims or IFD set up but using https?

Thanks
